| Weight Classifications and Aggregates |
 |
Masonry block has three classifications according to weight. Light Weight units weigh between 85 and 105 pounds per cubic foot. Medium Weight units weigh between 105 and 125 pounds per cubic foot. Normal Weight units weigh over 125 pounds per cubic foot. Schuster's currently manufactures only Normal Weight and Light Weight units. Light Weight Block will be lighter, have a higher fire rating, a higher R value and will be more effective for sound absorption (NRC rating). Normal Weight Block will have a higher compressive strength, a tighter texture and will be more effective for sound transmission (STC rating).
The most common aggregates in our market are limestone and pea gravel, used in the manufacture of Normal Weight block. Schuster's Building Products uses Haydite (expanded shale) in the manufacture of light weight block. Our Normal and Lightweight block will meet and/or exceed the ASTM specifications C90-90, Type I (hollow load bearing concrete masonry units) in regards to strength, shrinkage and absorption. All units are available in either mix designs to accommodate a specific customized look.
